Get to Know Dr. Ramiz Hamid

My interest in medicine stems from an early age. My younger brother had a health condition in childhood that required extended hospital stays. I was inspired by the dedicated physicians who cared for him at all hours of the day and night. I discovered dermatology much later during rotations in medical school. Given the prevalence of skin cancer and the disfiguring nature of many skin conditions, I was immediately struck by the enormous potential for dermatology care to improve people’s lives.

I find satisfaction in diagnosing and treating skin conditions across the entire spectrum of dermatologic disease. Surgical procedures to remove cancerous skin growths are particularly rewarding because they tend to have low risk and high success rates. I have the opportunity to cure a patient of cancer in a single visit!

Volunteering in free health clinics throughout college and medical school showed me how difficult it can be for economically disadvantaged patients to get the care they need. My quest for answers to questions like “Why is the cost of healthcare so high?” and “How does insurance decide what medications and procedures to cover?” led me to pursue an MPH with a focus in health policy. While at Harvard, I learned from giants in the field including Dr. Atul Gawande and Dr. Vivek Murthy. The fact that many of my questions remain unanswered just underscores the remarkable complexity of our healthcare system.

I’m fond of this classic quote from Sir Wiliam Osler: “The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease.”
