Chemical peels can be an excellent way to restore your youthful glow and revive your skin. As we age, our skin cells don’t replenish themselves as rapidly as they did when we were younger. This slower cell turnover rate can cause our skin to lose its luster and appear dull, aged, and dry. At Dayton Skin, we are a proud provider of the Jessner +TCA chemical peel which will leave your skin radiant, glowing, and more youthful in appearance.
Chemical peels
Chemical peels are used to improve the appearance and texture of the skin on the face, neck, and hands. By using a chemical solution, the damaged outer layers of your skin are exfoliated breaking up dead and damaged skin cells. These skin cells will eventually peel off to reveal fresh new skin underneath that is softer, healthier, and younger in appearance. Chemical peels can improve sun damage, uneven skin tones, acne or acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, irregular pigmentation, and rough skin. These peels are also known for stimulating the production of collagen and unclogging pores to help prevent future breakouts.
What is the Jessner Peel?
The Jessner + TCA peel is considered a medium-depth peel designed to improve the appearance, texture, and tone of your skin by chemically exfoliating away blemishes and minor signs of age. Using salicylic acid to exfoliate, TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid) to treat fine lines and wrinkles, and lactic acid for optimal hydration, the Jessner peel penetrates the upper dermis to remove dead layers and reveal smoother, clearer, and more youthful skin. One of the benefits of chemical peels, including the Jessner + TCA peel, is that they are suitable for all skin types and tones as they can be entirely customized to suit your skincare needs and goals.
Pre-Treatment
Prior to your procedure, you may be asked to apply certain ointments for a few weeks to prepare your skin. You can prepare your skin for treatment by cleansing and moisturizing twice a day, applying sunscreen of at least 30 SPF every two hours during the day, and using a Retinoid at night. Retinoids are a great way to ensure your skin is healthy and evenly exfoliated before your peel. If you are prone to hyperpigmentation, you should consider prepping the skin with a topical Hydroquinone as well. We advise patients to discontinue the use of retinols a few days before the peel to prevent irritation during treatment.
We may recommend that patients who smoke refrain from smoking at least six weeks prior to their scheduled appointment to promote better healing. It is also ideal for patients to purchase after-care products beforehand; this may include gentle cleansers and moisturizers such as Vaseline or Aquaphor.
Procedure
At your scheduled appointment, the aesthetician will cleanse your skin of any dirt or oils and if necessary, administer a numbing ointment or injection to the area for your comfort during the procedure. Once the area is cleansed and numb, your customized Jessner solution will be brushed onto your skin by the aesthetician and left to dry for the recommended time. Typically, 2 coats of the solution are applied for superficial peels, but additional layers may be applied depending on your condition and goals of treatment.
During treatment, it is not uncommon to experience a slight burn, tightness, or tingling sensation similar to a sunburn. After 10 minutes, a board-certified dermatologist will apply the TCA portion of the peel until the skin appears frosted. Then, the chemical peel is washed off with ice water by the aesthetician. No neutralizing agent is needed for the Jessner peel.
Your aesthetician will then apply the product to your face to assist with the healing process and provide you with post-peel instructions.
Recovery
Medium chemical peels, such as the Jessner + TCA peel, can cause mild redness, stinging, and flaking similar to that of a deep sunburn after treatment but should subside within a week. The peeling process typically begins within 48 hours and can last several days. It is important during this recovery period to keep your skin hydrated and avoid peeling or pulling at the flaking skin. The peeling acts as a bandage and protects the new skin growth until it is ready. Removing this protective layer too soon can result in pain, burning, and potential scarring. You should avoid direct sun exposure for at least a week following treatment to prevent damage and irritation to your skin.
Once the peeling is complete after about two weeks, your follow-up appointment will be scheduled for complimentary dermaplane treatment to remove any residual flakes. It can take a few months for redness to go away and for patients to experience full results. However, many patients report improvements within the first few days. Changes in the skin will continue to improve in the weeks afterward. Other risks can be present. If you have concerns, please schedule a FREE consultation with our Aesthetician for more details on risks, treatment schedule, and recovery timeline.
